Cosmonautics Day is a holiday celebrated in Russia on April 12. This holiday celebrates the first manned space flight performed on April 12, 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
The holiday was established in the Soviet Union one year later, on April 9, 1962 by the Special Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union was the highest legislative body in the Soviet Union and the only one with the power to pass constitutional amendments. It elected the Presidium, formed the Council of Ministers, the Supreme Court, and appointed the Procurator General of the USSR.
