Russia launched Soyuz TMA-13M manned spacecraft.

On May 28, 2014 at 19:57 UTC the Russian “Soyuz TMA-13M” spacecraft was launched from Baykonur Cosmodrome. The space vehicle was orbited by the Russian “Soyuz-FG” rocket-carrier. The spacecraft is piloted by 3 cosmonauts: Commander, Russian cosmonaut Maksim Suraev (center); flight-engineer, American astronaut Gregory Wiseman (right); flight-engineer German astronaut Alexander Gerst (left).

The space vehicle is to dock with the International Space Station on May 29. Suraev, Wiseman and Gerst will join current ISS expedition members Skvortsov, Artemjev and Swanson.

Sea Launch orbited Eutelsat satellite.

On May 26, 2014 at 21:10 UTC Sea Launch AG successfully launched the Eutelsat-3B European telecommunication satellite from the ocean-based Odyssey Launch Platform in the Pacific Ocean. The satellite was orbited by the Zenit-3SL rocket-carrier.

Japan launched radar mapping satellite.

On May 24, 2014 at 03:05 UTC the H-2A (202) F-24 rocket-carrier was launched from Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The rocket orbited the Daichi-2 satellite also dubbed ALOS-2 (Advanced Land Observation Satellite-2). The satellite will map the globe every two weeks, helping authorities respond to natural disasters, track agricultural yields and monitor shipping lanes.

The rocket also orbited 4 other satellites. The UNIFORM-1 (University International Formation Mission) satellite; SOCRATES (Space Optical Communications Research Advanced Technology Satellite); SpriteSat (Raijin, Rising); SPROUT (Space Research On Unique Technology).

Russia launched military satellites.

On May 23, 2014 at 05:27 UTC the “Rockot” rocket-carrier was launched from Plesetsk Cosmodrome, Arkhangelsk region, North Russia. The rocket orbited a trio of military communications satellites of the “Rodnik-C” type. The satellites received the names Kosmos-2496, Kosmos-2497 and Kosmos-2498.

US launched intelligence satellite.

On May 22, 2014 at 13:05 UTC the “Atlas-5” rocket-carrier was launched from Cape Canaveral launch site of US Air Force. The launch was performed by United Launch Alliance supported by the 45th Space Wing of US Air Force. The rocket orbited the NROL-33 payload for the National Reconnaissance Office. The nature of the payload is not officially reported, but experts believe that is a telecommunication satellite of the Quasar type.

Astronaut Wubbo Ockels passed away.

On May 18, 2014 Astronaut Wubbo Ockels, the first Dutchman in space, passed away. He was 68.

US launched navigation satellite.

On May 17, 2014 at 00:03 UTC the “Delta-4” rocket-carrier was launched from Cape Canaveral launch site of US Air Force. The launch was performed by United Launch Alliance supported by the 45th Space Wing of US Air Force. The rocket orbited GPS-2F-6 “Rigel” navigation satellite.

U.S. Dragon spacecraft returns to Earth from space station.

On May 18, 2014 at 19:05 UTC the American “Dragon” unmanned supply spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. The “Dragon” is a commercial spacecraft operated by U.S. space company SpaceX. The “Dragon” cargo spacecraft fell into the ocean about 480 kilometers west of Baja California, where it was retrieved by SpaceX engineers. It was the company's third contracted cargo resupply mission to the ISS (CRS-3 flight). CRS means Commercial Resupply Services. According to the U.S. space agency, a recovery boat will carry the spacecraft to a port near Los Angeles, where it will be prepared for a return journey to SpaceX's test facility in McGregor, Texas, for processing. Dragon carried about 1,588 kg of NASA cargo and science samples from the ISS.

Dragon undocked from the space station.

On May 18, 2014 at 13:26 UTC the “Dragon” unmanned supply spacecraft (CRS-3 flight) was undocked from the ISS. At the controls of the robot arm inside the space station's cupola module, American astronaut Steve Swanson gave the command to release the spaceship to begin the trip back to Earth. Swanson and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov monitored the Dragon's departure as a series of rocket firings placed the spacecraft on course to a safe distance from the space station.

Proton rocket burns up shortly after launch.

On May 16, 2014 at 01:42 Moscow time (on May 15 at 21:42 UTC) the Russian “Proton-M” rocket-carrier was launched from Baykonur Cosmodrome. The rocket carrying an Express-AM4R communication satellite burned up in the atmosphere above China, with no debris reaching the Earth. The rocket had an engine problem at the 540th second after launch. Roscosmos said all components of the rocket, the Briz-M booster and the satellite, as well as fuel, burned up during re-entry to the atmosphere.
