55 Anniversary of making decision of Baykonur Cosmodrome building.
On February 12, 1955 the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Council of Ministers of the USSR passed the joint Resolution about the building of the number 5 scientific-research and testing area in the structure of the USSR Ministry of Defence (NIP-5), currently known as Baykonur Cosmodrome.
The testing area was to test both military rockets as well as to make researches in the field of space technology. The need for a new test range became evident after the Soviet Union began to develop its own intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The Kapustin Yar test range near Astrakhan, southern Russia, was located in a more densely populated area and could not therefore be used for ICBM tests.
The new missile test range was located further ... Read more »

SDO satellite launch.
On February 11, 2010 at 15:23 UTC, SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) satellite was launched from SLC-41 launch site of Cape Canaveral, USA.
The launch was performed by United Launch Alliance. The $848 million satellite was orbited by the Atlas-5 / 401 (AV-021) rocket-carrier.
SDO is to probe the sun and unravel its fundamental affects on Earth and society. The satellite's three instruments will take rapid-fire images of the sun, peer into the solar interior and measure its extreme ultraviolet radiation output. It will observe the sun faster, deeper and in greater detail than any previous observatories. The sensors will send up to 150 million bits of data per second, almost 50 times more science data than any other mission in NASA history. SDO will study the sun for at least five years, a ...
