On June 5, 2019 at 04:06 UTC, the “Long March-11” (“Changzheng-11”) rocket-carrier was launched from a barge (an ocean-going mobile platform) in the Yellow Sea. The rocket orbited seven satellites on China’s first space launch from an ocean vessel. Multiple Chinese support vessels accompanied the launch platform in the Yellow Sea. During the launch, the barge was located in a distance of 400 kilometers north of Shanghai. Launching rockets from ocean vessels is not new. The “Sea Launch”, a company founded in 1995 by U.S., Russian and Ukrainian partners, launched 36 rockets since 1999 till 2014. NASA and the Italian Space Agency also conducted 9 orbital launches of the “Scout” rocket from the San Marco platform off the coast of Kenya from 1967 till 1988.
