On August 18, 2014 two Russian cosmonauts Aleksandr Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev onboard the International Space Station (ISS) hand-launched a miniature satellite during a multi-hour spacewalk.
The nano-satellite NS-1 was placed on orbit during the spacewalk by Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev. The 1.5-kg device was launched in the interests of the “Energy” space-rocket corporation to test the micro-electronics and optical equipment.
The spacewalk started at 14:02 UTC and lasted 5 hours and 10 minutes. Beside the NS-1 launch, the cosmonauts were also conducting a range of maintenance and servicing work on the ISS outer surface.
