For the first time Russian rocket was launched from Kourou.
On October 21, 2011 at 10:30 UTC the Russian Soyuz-2.1b (Soyuz-ST) rocket-carrier for the first time was launched from the Kourou space center in French Guiana.
The rocket is to orbit two Galileo navigation system satellites. The Soyuz ST is a modification of the three-stage Soyuz-2 rocket with Fregat booster, adapted for launch in the conditions prevalent in Kourou at the Guiana space center (Center Spatiale Guianese) where there is high heat and humidity.

Russian rocket orbited a US satellite.
On October 19, 2011 at 18:48 UTC the Russian "Proton-M” rocket-carrier was launched from Baykonur Cosmodrome. The rocket equipped with the "Briz-M” booster orbited the U.S. ViaSat-1 communications satellite. ViaSat-1 weighs six tons and should operate for 15 years at a geostationary orbit. A sophisticated broadband satellite will provide direct-to-home Internet connections from space for customers across the U.S. and Canada. The satellite was made by the American "Space Systems/Loral” company.

India launched 4 satellites.
On October 12, 2011 at 05:30 UTC the PSLV-CA (PSLV-C18) rocket-carrier was launched from Sriharikota spaceport, 80 km from Chennai, India. The rocket orbited 4 satellites - Megha-Tropiques, SRMSat, VesselSat-1, Jugnu. PSLV means Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.
Megha-Tropiques with its circular orbit inclined 20 degree to the equator will enable climate research and also aid scientists seeking to refine prediction models.
The three small satellites that were ferried by the PSLV-C18 were the 10.9-kg SRMSAT built by the students of SRM University near Chennai, the three-kg remote sensing satellite Jugnu from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) and the 28.7-kg VesselSat from LuxSpace of Luxembourg to locate ships on high seas.

China launched a French-made satellite.
On October 7, 2011 at 08:21 UTC the Chang Zheng-3B (Long March-III2) rocket-carrier was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwest China's Sichuan Province. The rocket orbited the W3C French-made telecom satellite.
The launch was carried out by the China Great Wall Industry Corporation and the China Institute of Rocket Carrier Technology, both under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, as well as the China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General (CLTC).
The W3C telecom satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space, a French satellite manufacturer, and is owned by Eutelsat, a leading provider of satellite communication services. The W3C has a designed lifespan of 15 years and will provide television, radio, broadband, video and Internet service.

STS-134 flight in Astrophilately.

This flown cover was postmarked aboard the International Space Station on May 18, 2011 at the day when the "Endeavour” American Space Shuttle (STS-134 flight) docked with the ISS.
The cover was autographed by all 13 astronauts who were aboard the ISS at that day.
It was the last flight of the Endeavour.

Russian-Ukrainian rocket orbited a satellite.
On October 05, 2011 at 21:00 UTC (on October 6 at 01:00 Moscow time) the Russian-Ukrainian "Zenit-2SB” rocket-carrier equipped with the DM-SLB booster was launched from Baykonur Cosmodrome. The rocket orbited the U.S. "Intelsat-18” telecommunication satellite.
The Intelsat-18 satellite will provide telecommunication services to customers in East Asia, U.S. West Coast and the Pacific Region. Intelsat Ltd. operates the world's most extensive satellite network, comprising over 50 satellites.
The Zenit-2, a medium-lift two-stage rocket, is produced by the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Its DM-SLB stage is made by Russian "Energy” Space Corporation.

FIP Section for Astrophilately.
From September 5 till September 9, 2011 the 26th Planetary Congress of Association of Space Explorers was held in Moscow. More than 100 cosmonauts and astronauts from all over the world took part in the Congress. The event was devoted to the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s space flight.
We would like to inform all Astrophilately and space thematic collectors that 2 Astrophilately collectors also took part in the Congress – Julius Cacka (Czech Republic), the member of the Bureau of the FIP Section for Astrophilately and Walter Hopferwieser (Austria), a well-known researcher of Space Mail.

Russia launched a Glonass satellite.
On October 02, 2011 at 20:15 UTC (on October 3 at 00:15 Moscow time) the Russian "Soyuz-2.1B” rocket-carrier was launched from Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia. The rocket equipped with the "Fregat” booster orbited the Russian "Glonass-M” navigation satellite.
Glonass is Russia's answer to the U.S. Global Positioning System, or GPS, and is designed for both military and civilian uses. Both systems allow users to determine their positions to within a few meters.
